Rupen Jhaveri Named in Economic Times ‘40 Under Forty’ List of Top Young Business Leaders

Rupen M Jhaveri has been named as one of India’s top young business leaders in the Economic Times Annual ’40 Under Forty’ List of 2018. Currently the Managing Director, Private Equity at leading global investment firm KKR, Rupen has led the firm in making a number of major investments in multiple Indian businesses. He is the son of Chitra and Mukesh Jhaveri and the grandson of Haribhai Jhaveri of Crown TV.

The ET ’40 Under Forty’ list honours 40 of the brightest corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and owner-professionals of the country under the age of forty. It has been prepared in association with Knowledge Partner Spencer Stuart, one of the world’s leading global executive search and leadership consulting firms. Those in the list will be felicitated at a special function to be held soon.

Rupen joined KKR & Co. (which gets its name from its founders Jerome Kohlberg, Henry Kravis, George Roberts) in 2009.  He has been a member of the India investing team since its founding, and was promoted as MD in 2017. At KKR, he has led investments in Alliance Tires, Magma Fincorp, Dalmia Cement, Max Financial Services, Emerald Media, SBI Life Insurance, Bharti Infratel and HDFC.

Prior to joining KKR, Rupen was with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in its principal investment area and Warburg Pincus in Mumbai where he was involved in a number of investments including Mahindra & Mahindra, NDTV, Amtek Auto, Sigma Electric, Sintex, Dainik Bhaskar, amongst others.

Rupen is a graduate from the Stern School of Business, New York University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance (Honors - Magna Cum Laude).

The ET write up quotes Rupen:

“Success to me is competing and beating yourself as against focusing on beating others. Continuously strive for self-improvement. Success also means being balanced about work, hobbies and family -- it is very important to be well-rounded.

“The best advice I ever got was ‘Vision without action is a dream. Action without vision ins simply passing time. Action with vision is making a positive difference.’

“One achievement I am most proud of – many years ago our family was in severe financial crisis due to some poor business decisions. Extremely proud of the moment when I managed to pay off every single penny to all the creditors and at the same time paid off all my student loans ahead of time. It has taught me a lot of lessons including mental toughness.

“How I unwind -- watching cricket with my kids or playing cricket for the CCI team (Rupen has also played for the Palanpur Samaj Kendra team). Reading non-fiction books - especially on espionage, international politics and biographies -- is something I enjoy a lot.
