Dr Shailesh Mehta Makes Further Donation of US$ 1 Million to IIT-B Management School

Dr. Shailesh Mehta and Mrs. Kalpa Mehta have made a generous donation of US$ 1 million to enable Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IIIT-B) establish an Executive MBA program in partnership with Washington University at St. Louis. Dr Mehta is a well-known Indian American executive and venture capitalist and runs the Shailesh & Kalpa Mehta Charitable Foundation, through which the donation was made.
 
The donation, made in the institute’s Diamond Jubilee year, is the second such amount that Dr Mehta has donated to the college from where he completed his Engineering degree some decades ago. Earlier, he had donated a sum of US$ 2 million to help set up the management school, appropriately named the Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM) at the Institute.


Dr. Mehta did his B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1971 and completed masters and doctorate degrees in Operations Research and Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University.


Since then he has held many prestigious positions in US corporations including as Chairman of the Board and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. He is also known for his philanthropy, mainly under the Shailesh J. Mehta and Kalpa S. Mehta Charitable Foundation, which has given millions in grants to various institutions including the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Dr Mehta has also won numerous awards for his achievements and philanthropy.

 
The latest contribution was announced at function organised on Oct. 14 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.by the Bombay Heritage Foundation to celebrate of IIT Bombay’s 60th year of existence. It will help equip the centre with state-of-the-art infrastructure for an Executive M.B.A. Program, including lecture and seminar halls, and for holding research and industry conferences and symposiums.

 
Speaking at the function, Dr Mehta said, “I am honored and privileged to make this pledge to SJSOM to help support the Executive MBA program that will help create world class corporate leaders of the future, who will make significant contributions toward India’s rapid development and a better quality of life for its citizens.”
 
Responding to the gesture, IIT Bombay director Devang Khakhar offered thanks to Dr Mehta. "I would like to thank Shailesh and Kalpa Mehta for their generous gift. Our school of management is doing extremely well and the new Executive Education Center is going to enhance its reputation further, and it will benefit the larger community in and around the city of Mumbai and make a significant impact.”
