Rhythm Rewritten – a Kathak and Tap Performance Featuring Seema Mehta
Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai

An Indo-US presentation highlighting the richness of two cultures, Rhythm Rewritten is a high energy performance of rhythm, speed, power, grace and beauty. It is a collaborative performance where Kathak meets Tap featuring Seema Mehta and Jason Samuels Smith. Jason Samuels Smith, an Emmy awarded tap star from New York converses through rhythm with the dynamic Kathak icon Seema Mehta. Seema has trained under renowned Kathak maestro Late Pandit Chitresh Das for fourteen years.

The proceeds of the show will go towards the SEVA project being run by Seema Mehta’s Chhandam Nritya Bharati under which children from underprivileged backgrounds have access to training in Kathak. The project is being run in collabboration with an NGO – SMILE.

SEEMA MEHTA is a graduate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, USA with Bachelors of Fine Art (BFA) specializing in painting and sculpture and has been training under renowned Kathak maestro Pandit Chitresh Das for the past thirteen years. She is an expert practitioner and performer of Pt. Das' innovation- Kathak Yoga, where she sings a melody while playing the harmonium and performs complex compositions, rhythms or chhands at the same time.

Seema is the Director of Chhandam Nritya Bharati-India where she teaches over 150 students in Mumbai and Kolkata. She has worked with the children of Kolkata's red light areas, the New Light Project in particular empowering them through Kathak. She also teaches children from the Akanksha and SMILE Foundations in Mumbai. Going beyond the traditional preview of dance, Seema's vision is to touch lives through her work.

JASON SAMUELS SMITH is a multi-talented leader in the Art form of Tap. Accolades include a Dance Magazine Award, an Emmy and an American Choreography Award for ''Outstanding Choreography'', and many others.
