The hospital was set up to treat women from the rural and under privileged communities in the North Gujarat region. The hospital, which started as a dispensary with a single lady doctor, now has ultra-modern facilities with qualified staff of doctors and nurses. It provides treatment at most nominal rates to the poor and underprivileged class without any discrimination of class, creed or religion.

Origins
In the early decades of the 20th century, the sudden, untimely death of a young woman during childbirth prompted six leading citizens of Palanpur to help set up a medical facility focused on women. The response to this dispensary which was run by a qualified and efficient lady doctor was tremendous. The five founders were:

  • Mehta Vahalubhai Meghji
  • Kothari Ujambhai Manekchand
  • Kothari Dharamchandbhai Manekchand
  • Mehta Jechand Malukchand
  • Shah Tribhaovandas Harakhchand

Impressed by this work, the Nawab of Palanpur, Taley Mohammed Khan donated a tract of land so that the dispensary could be converted into a full fledged hospital for expectant mothers and children. The building was completed in 1926 and then used for several decades.

Development

k d parikh hospital In 1985 the hospital got a new building as part of the expansion plan. Later with the aid of a donation from the Jee Parivar, a full-fledged children’s hospital - the Jee Children’s Hospital - was established in 1998.

Jee children hospital Later the Jee Parivar constructed a new gynaecology hospital in place of the old one, and the new Hospital building was opened in 2004.
In addition to mother and child care, Shri K.D.Parikh Trust offered to establish a Female and Child hospital for general surgeries and the construction is almost complete for a new 40 - bed Female and Child Hospital.

The Paediatric department or Jee Children’s Hospital has 30 beds and treats over 10,000 children at its OPD facility each year. It also offers vaccinations and other immunization programmes.

The Palanpur Female Hospital has been a part of the Gujarat government’s Chiranjivi Yojna from March 2006. Aimed at reducing female mortality during pregnancy, the scheme offers cash incentives to have women from the BPL (below poverty line) families treated at a hospital. Under this scheme so far a total number of 335 deliveries have been conducted.

The Hospital also has a Sonography machine, a full fledged laboratory for investigations and a dedicated in-house medical store.

Laboratory in the Hospital The Hospital runs a Thalassemia center with a dedicated programme in association with ‘LIFE’ Indian Medical Scientific Research Foundation, Rajkot

Zaveri Mangalji Vamalshi Dispensary was established in the year 1911 for providing health care to the needy and poor people of Palanpur. Gradually, people from the nearby areas including the adjoining state of Rajasthan, have been visiting this institute in Palanpur for medical treatment.

Considering the growing number of beneficiaries, the dispensary was expanded into a full fledged hospital in the year 1972 and renamed as Zaveri Mangalji Vamalshi Dispensary and Shri L.L. Parikh & Shri C. L. Parikh Hospital, Palanpur. The Hospital is centrally situated near (Old) Delhi Gate on the way to Vavdi – (Baradpura area). The location is ideal because it is easily accessible from the S.T. stand, Railway station, Nani Bazaar, Kamalpura etc.

The area in which Mahajan Hospital operates has a low and middle socio-economic class population dependent on it. The communities, whose literacy rate is also low, face the double disease burden of communicable diseases like TB, malaria and acute respiratory diseases on one hand and chronic non-communicable diseases like kidney stone, heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes, on the other, due to rapidly changing lifestyle, behavioural patterns and increase in life expectancy.

Majority of the local population prefer Mahajan Hospital compared to government hospitals because of the personal care and attention by the doctors and staff as also the most modern facilities available at an affordable cost. This is the only hospital in Palanpur with well-equipped I.C.C.U. and I.C.U.
