Dr. Harshad Mehta is ‘Global Indian of the Year’ at Retail Jeweller India Awards 2017

Dr. Harshad Mehta, Founder, 7Cs Group and a leading diamantaire who began his career in India, was felicitated as ‘Global Indian of the Year’ at the recent 13th Annual Gemfields Retail Jeweller India Awards 2017 held in Mumbai on July 29, 2017. The award was presented by Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group.

Beginning his foray into the diamond business from a single room flat in Mumbai in 1960, and has since developed a vast business empire under the diversified 7Cs Group of today, with interests in the diamond and gold jewellery (wholesale and retail) industry as well as in the construction, real estate and hospitality sectors.

Popularly known as ‘Diamond King of the World’, Harshadbhai has developed a profound understanding of the global diamond industry in a career spanning almost 50 years. He was the first of the major players from the global industry to set up a base in Dubai and expanded both in the local market and in surrounding markets in the MENA region, Russia, Iran and Turkey.

Dr. Mehta has been Chairman of the Gem Jewellery Export Promotion Council in India, Chairman of Dubai Diamond Exchange and a member of the Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group. He has also been consistently voted among the top 20 powerful Indians in the Gulf.

Besides running a successful business, Harshadbhai is also a well-known philanthropist and closely associated with a number of social initiatives in the fields of education, primary healthcare, medical research and other developmental challenges. He plays an important role in the EKAL Vidyalaya Foundation of India, is chairman of the governing council of Project Life, an organization comprising Saurashtra Medical & Charitable Trust, Indian Medical Scientific Research Foundation and other affiliated trusts, and is a former president of the Rotary Club of Bombay Metropolitan, as well as being associated with the promotion and administration of many sports bodies, specifically cricket.

Dr Mehta is a family man first and all his children follow his path. Rihen, who swam the English Channel at the age of 12, is now the Chairman of the 7Cs Group and on the Board of Directors of the prestigious Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group and the Dubai Diamond Exchange; Priti, the elder daughter, founder of Omved, a lifestyle brand, who also, with her husband Majid Algouneh, acquired and now run the 120-year Hammer & Sohne of Germany; and Soigne, the younger daughter, US-based Marketing Director of fine jewelry brand Hueb.
