The hospital provides specialized treatment for different types of ophthalmologic problems, both through its OPD and Operation Theatre. During 2007 - 08, the hospital handled 13,231 cases, including 699 cataract patients who were given IOL (intra ocular lens) treatment.
The hospital was set up to treat women from the rural and under privileged communities in the North Gujarat region. The hospital, which started as a dispensary with a single lady doctor, now has ultra-modern facilities with qualified staff of doctors and nurses. It provides treatment at most nominal rates to the poor and underprivileged class without any discrimination of class, creed or religion.
In the early decades of the 20th century, the sudden, untimely death of a young woman during childbirth prompted six leading citizens of Palanpur to help set up a medical facility focused on women. The response to this dispensary which was run by a qualified and efficient lady doctor was tremendous. The five founders were:
Impressed by this work, the Nawab of Palanpur, Taley Mohammed Khan donated a tract of land so that the dispensary could be converted into a full fledged hospital for expectant mothers and children. The building was completed in 1926 and then used for several decades.
In 1985 the hospital got a new building as part of the expansion plan. Later with the aid of a donation from the Jee Parivar, a full-fledged children’s hospital - the Jee Children’s Hospital - was established in 1998.
Later the Jee Parivar constructed a new gynaecology hospital in place of the old one, and the new Hospital building was opened in 2004. In addition to mother and child care, Shri K.D.Parikh Trust offered to establish a Female and Child hospital for general surgeries and the construction is almost complete for a new 40 - bed Female and Child Hospital.
The hospital, which has three interconnected buildings with large spacious corridors, roomy wards and wide frontage and foyer, is spread across two acres. It is equipped with the latest medical equipment and run by a qualified Gynaecologist, Paediatrician and Obstetrician.
The Gynaecology department has 48 beds, and does about 2500 to 3000 deliveries each year, besides other treatments like tubectomy, etc. The outpatient department caters to 25,000 to 40,000 patients per year.
The Paediatric department or Jee Children’s Hospital has 30 beds and treats over 10,000 children at its OPD facility each year. It also offers vaccinations and other immunization programmes.
The Palanpur Female Hospital has been a part of the Gujarat government’s Chiranjivi Yojna from March 2006. Aimed at reducing female mortality during pregnancy, the scheme offers cash incentives to have women from the BPL (below poverty line) families treated at a hospital. Under this scheme so far a total number of 335 deliveries have been conducted.
The Hospital also has a Sonography machine, a full fledged laboratory for investigations and a dedicated in-house medical store.
The Hospital runs a Thalassemia center with a dedicated programme in association with ‘LIFE’ Indian Medical Scientific Research Foundation, Rajkot
Currently treatment offered to both women and children is subsidized. Some deserving patients are even treated free. The hospital has also started free vaccination programme of MMR and Hepatitis-B for children
