Religious Sites

Palanpur > Religious Sites

Banaskantha district has a glorious past (BC 3000 to BC 1500). There are a number of religious sites that were built during the Mahabharata period, that are testimony to the deep roots of the religious legacy of the region. Temples like Ambaji, Chandravati, Mukteshwar, etc. built during that period are well known pilgrimage sites since many decades. Later there were also many temples built during the rule of the Rajput dynasties in Vaav, Thara, Danta and Kankrej, or of the Nawabs who ruled over Palanpur, Radhanpur and Varahi.

Palanpur has the honour of being called a "Punya bhoomi" today. Many great saints hail from Palanpur – Shri Hira Vijaya Suriji who deeply influenced the Mughal Emperor Akbar and converted him to vegetarianism was born in Palanpur. Shri Somchandra Suriji who was closely associated with the magnificent Dilwara temples in Abu was born in Palanpur. Shri Buddhisagar Suriji who converted Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaikwad of Baroda to Jainism renounced the world in Palanpur

Shri Jitendra C Mehta, Editor of weekly Swarajya has done extensive research for over 10 years on Tirths in and around Palanpur. This work has been published as a column in a local newspaper over the years. These writings have also been compiled in the Diwali 2007 issue of Swarajya.

A lot of information on Tirths has been taken from this issue. Palanpur Online acknowledges the efforts of Shri Jitubhai for this section.
