DADAWADI

Located at the end of the city on the road going towards Jagana village is Dadawadi a special temple that houses the footsteps of the great Jain Saint Dada Saheb Shri Jinadatta Suriji.

He was a greatly respected Jain Guru, especially by the Bhansalis.

JEEWANWADI

In the early 20th century, the Jains of Patan (approximately 72 kms from Palanpur) enjoyed a close relationship with the Jains of Palanpur, and marriages between the members of these two communities were fairly common.

At the turn of the century, a few Jain families shifted from Patan to Palanpur and, in order to establish a close and cordial relationship with the Palanpuris, decided to establish properties for the community.

Thus in 1912, Shri Chhotalal Jhaveri built a Jain library in Palanpur in order to fulfill the last wishes of his father Shri Hiralal Jhaveri. Similarly, Shri Vadilal Jhaveri constructed a building in memory of Shri Jivanlal Tribhovandas Jhaveri for the Lokagach Jain community in Palanpur. This building is now known as Jivanwadi and houses a Jain Upashraya today.

The property of Jivanwadi was gifted by HH Nawab of Palanpur free of cost on May 31, 1905.

JUMA MASJID

The Juma Masjid is an important monument for Palanpur's Muslim population, as the Friday namaaz has been held here since 1882.

This mosque was built by Diwan Mujahid Khan II in 1649, but began to be used for mass namaaz only after 1847, during the rule of Diwan Fateh Khan. The holy structure was skilfully restored by Diwan Sher Mohammed Khan.

MAKBARA

The skilfully designed royal tombs that serve as resting places for the deceased members of the Nawab's family lie in Eastern Palanpur.

The skilful carvings on some of the marble tombs are similar to some of those constructed at the height of the majestic Mughal era. The Makbara also has the Mazaars of the royal priests Mushad Mahedavi Ashraf Saheb and Sayed Hazrat Bandagi Miyan amongst others.

MURSHAD BAGH - THE DARGAH OF MURSHAD BAWA

The Mira Darwaja (gate) leads to the dargah or the tomb of great Sufi Saint Murshad Bawa. Alongside it lie the dargahs of Sufi Saint Anwar Kaji and that of Oliya Mastfakir Amirbapu.

Every year the area comes alive on the eve of Kartaki Purnima with a traditional "Urs", or fair, held in commemoration of Saint Murshad Bawa. This festival sees grand celebrations in both the Hindu and Muslim communities and communal unity.

NAGNEJI MATA TEMPLE

When Diwan Mujahid Khan II married Manbai, he received a book and a picture of Nagneji Devi in his dowry by mistake. Considering this as a sign of good fortune, he erected a temple of Nagneji Devi in Rajgadhi. Believed to be constructed in the 16th century, this temple pays homage to Nagneji Devi and Lord Shiva.

The temple's Shiva Linga, which depicts the Moon and Stars as well as the Om, Swastika and the Cross as an embodiment of unity amongst all religions, makes this temple unique. It has a strong tradition of being closely linked to Navaratri, and is opened only once a year, on the 8th day of the festival.

PALLAVIYA PARSHWANATH JAIN TEMPLE

Palanpur's main temple is the Pallaviya Parshwanath temple or Motu Derasar as it is more popularly called.

Enriching the city centre with its beautiful carvings and rich, intricate beauty is the Motu Derasar, a temple constructed by King Prahladan of Palanpur. It is dedicated to Lord Parshwanath and contains the only existing image of King Prahladan. It has witnessed several tragedies, in the form of various attacks through history, but has been subsequently rebuilt on each occasion.

Legend has it that King Prahladhan of the powerful Parmar clan of Abu once melted down a Panchbhutti Jain statue. Soon after this he fell seriously ill and no doctors could help him.

One day he met Acharya Shri Sheetdhawal Maharajshri and pleaded for help in curing his illness. On hearing the whole story, the Maharajshri told King Prahladan to build a new city and erect a grand temple and install Bhagwan Shri Parshwanath's statue in it. The sacred water after the abhishekh of Bhog should be applied on the King's body.

Kind Prahladhan built Prahladhan Vihar, a Bavan (52) jinalaya temple which is today called Motu Dairasar. The King used the sacred waters of the abhishekh to bathe himself and he was totally cured!



History records that this temple was one of the richest at that time. Prahladhan -- today's Palanpur -- was the brightest ornament of Gujarat, its prosperity and wealth vying with that of Swarglok.

Today, this Pallaviya Parshwanath temple is one of the important pilgrimage centres for Jains. It has come into the limelight after the recent discovery of many old Jin statues.

The 2001 earthquake and the heavy rains thereafter caused damage to the temple and it was decided to rebuild it.

A few months ago, while digging, the workers came upon a treasure trove of Jin statues - 112 in all! This was the 2nd time that such a find was recorded. In 1966, alongside 27 statues were found while digging. This has generated a lot of excitement. But the most astonishing thing was that while digging, the room housing the main Pallaviya Parshwanath statue caved in, but nothing happened to the statue. It was intact amidst all the ruins.

PATALESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR

The Pataleshwar Temple has an interesting origin -- King Siddharaj Solanki of the Solanki era was born at this site. In celebration, Maharani Minaldevi ordered that a well should be dug at the spot for thirsty travelers. While digging the well, a Shiva Linga was unearthed, and therefore, the Pataleshwar temple was later built in the shape of a well.

It was aptly christened Patal-eshwar, which means 'Lord under the ground'; The actual temple built in the 8th century AD lies 40 feet below the ground, while the new structure on top has only been recently added. On many original stones used to build the temple, inscriptions showing different symbols of snakes (who adorn Lord Shiva's neck) are found.

SHANTINATH JAIN DERASAR

The Shantinath Jain Derasar, a peaceful temple stands within the Brahmin locality near the Nagarkot belt, and is enclosed by the Gathaman Darwaja (gate).

As per records maintained by renowned Muni Shri Kantisagarji, it was first established in Vikram Samvat 1400 and has since stood firmly through various periods in the evolution of Palanpur. Restoration work carried out on different occasions over the last 600 years has helped maintain this prominent derasar.

AMBAJIMATA MANDIR, AMBAJI

One of the most popular pilgrim centres in India is Ambaji, situated in the Aravalli mountain range. It is about 60 kms from Palanpur. Over 30 lakh people visit this temple every year.

According to a story in the Bhagwata Puran, there was a time when Prajapati Daksh organized a yagna called 'Bruhaspatisak'. He invited all the gods but did not invite Lord Shankar, who was his son-in-law. Lord Shankar's wife Parvati went to the yagna at her father's home inspite of Shankar's protest. However, when she heard her father criticizing Shankar, she jumped into the flaming yagna kunda and gave her life. Lord Shankar carried her body on his shoulder and started wandering in the three Loks. On seeing this, Lord Vishnu cut her body into pieces with his Chakra. It is said that parts of Maa Parvati's heart fell at Arasur and that is why this Shaktipith is of special importance. Ma Ambaji is also believed to have rescued the Gods from the torture of the demon Mahisasura.


Her original abode is believed to be 4 kms beyond Ambaji, on the Gabbar Mountain. A fair is organized there every year on Chaitri Purnima and Bhadarvi Purnima. Hundreds of devotees come on foot to pay their respects to the Goddess. Poshi Punam, considered to be the Goddess' birthday, is celebrated with Navratri Garbas. This day sees the highest attendance of devotees.

At Ambaji, it is not an idol, but a Visayantra that is worshipped. It is made of pure gold and consists of 51 letters. It is placed in a Gokh (small hollow). The jewellery of the Visayantra is decorated with the crown and sari in such a manner that it appears as if the Goddess is sitting on her 'Savari'.

The Mahashakti rides a tiger on Sunday, Nandi, the holy cow, on Monday, a lion on Tuesday, an elephant (Airavat) on Wednesday, an eagle (Garud) on Thursday, a swan (Hans) on Friday and an elephant on Saturday.

Looking directly at the yantra is banned. So, the priest performs the pooja blind-folded. This yantra is also considered equivalent to the Kalpavruksha.
Ambaji has many guest houses, holiday homes and good Dharamshalas and hotels.

BAJOTHIA MAHADEV

This Mahadev temple, located 17 kms from Palanpur via Malan, is very old.
It is said that when people were digging here, they unearthed a Shivling and the ruins of an ancient courtyard that resembled a 'bajot' hence the name Bajothia Mahadev.

Situated amidst trees and streams, one has to climb down 40 stone steps to reach this small, but ancient temple. It is considered holy by the adivasis and the villagers residing around it.

Monday is Shivji's day and on this day hundreds of devotees flock to worship Shiva and offer the Billipatra. The temple site is well connected to Palanpur by buses and rickshaws.

SHIVMANDIR, BALARAM

Balaram, 16 kms from the town of Palanpur is the site of a beautiful Shivmandir. Today, it has also become famous as a picnic spot, frequented by devotees and tourists alike.

It is the site of the temple of Balaram Mahadev. This ancient Shivling temple lies amidst a dense forest. The Balaram river flows alongside and finally forms a natural lake called Gangasar. Many natural springs, which originate in the Aravalli mountains, are also seen alongside. The Dhara Mata and Hanuman temples are also located nearby.


Legend has it that during a drought a long time ago, the adivasis unknowingly left a baby behind when they migrated from this place. A year later, when they returned, the baby was still alive and so, they named this place 'Balaram'.

Devotees of Shiva flock to Balaram in large numbers to pray and offer Billipatra to Mahadev. They are seen in large numbers, especially on Mondays and in the month of Shravan.

There are many buses, rickshaws and jeeps that ply from Palanpur to Balaram. It is also accessible by train - the nearest station being Chitrasani Railway Station, 2 kms from Balaram.

The Palanpur Hindu Samaj runs a Dharamshala and a kitchen there for the convenience of visitors. There is also a Gujarat State Guest house there.

The Nawab Saheb of Palanpur's palace at Balaram has been converted into a luxury hotel.

SHRI PARSHWANATH DERASAR, BHILADIYAJI

This famous Jain pilgrimage centre is situated in Banaskantha district, at a distance of 22 kms from Deesa and 55 km from Palanpur (on the Palanpur-Radhanpur Highway). The site has great archaeological importance.

In the past, this pilgrimage centre was known as Bheempalli. Surrounded by forests, it was a bustling town with a large population of Jains and very beautiful Jain temples. There were 125 Jain temples, and an equal number of wells and step wells. Behind one such Jain temple lay the Raj Gadhi, which is now in complete ruins. It is believed that the Jain population left this town shortly before it was burnt in a fire, at the insistence of a Jain muni. They then settled in what is today known as Radhanpur.

Bheempalli lay in ruins for a long time. Another city was built over it in V.S.1872. While building the new city, many old excavations came to light including the Jain temple. What was astonishing was the discovery of the statue of Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan, which was totally intact and completely untouched by the fire and destruction. It is said that this very old and sacred statue of Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan dates back to Samprati Maharaja's time around 1324 AD.

With the permission of the Jain munis, this miraculous statue of Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan was installed in a new Jain temple amidst great pomp and grandeur. The temple has been restored in 2007 AD.

The town of Bheempalli was first renamed Trambavati and later Bhiladiyaji.

According to legend, this place was named Bhiladiyaji because Shrenik Kumar had married a Bhil girl here.

It is connected by rail - the Palanpur Gandhidham train and the Rajasthan Jodhpur train stop here.

There are two spacious Dharamshalas to cater to the needs of the hundred of devotees who arrive every day, where meals are provided to all.

SHRI NEMINATH DERASAR, BHOROL

The temple of Shri Bhorol Tirth, situated 17 kms from Tharad and 108 kms from Palanpur, is a Tirth of the 22nd Tirthankar of Jains, Shri Neminath Bhagwan.

There is a grand derasar in Bhorol adorned with 24 devkulikas. The main idol in this derasar is of Tirthankar Neminath Bhagwan.

Between the 11th and 16th century, there was a prosperous town here, called Pipalpur Pashtan. Around 1100 Jain families, including 60 multimillionaires, lived here. The Jain merchant Munjashah built a magnificent Jain temple with 1444 pillars, 72 Devkulikas and a step well. This temple no longer exists, but the ruins of the step well can be seen.

Over time this whole area was destroyed and it turned into a deserted, thick jungle, home to wild animals. People were scared to visit it. However a few years later, it was cleaned up again and people re-settled here. But due to the previous 'bhay' (fear or threat associated with this area due the thick jungle and wild animals) it came to be known as Bho-rahel, and this gradually changed to Bhorol.

Following the famine of the Chapnakal, a black stone idol of Shri Neminath Bhagwan was found by a kanbi working in a field. He carefully dug the entire place and came across many idols of Jain Tirthankars. Since the idols were broken they were buried again in the Lake Dhanagochar. After a few years, during the monsoons, these idols were re-located and placed in a derasar. This was during the rule of King Gajsingh.

VIJAYSAR MATA MANDIR, DANTIVADA

The temple of Vijaysar Mata has a famous legend associated with it. The legend is from the time that Darbar Ramaji and Darbar Harpal Singh were the rulers of this area. Harpal Singh was an ardent devotee of Vijaysar Mata and he would spend a lot of his time in worshipping the Goddess.

It is said that when Mohammad Begda came to Gujarat he passed through this area with his army. It is said that one day the queen was sitting at the window of Darbargadh and saw the long teeth of the elephants in Mohammad Begda's army. She was fascinated by them and immediately wanted to make beautiful bangles from them. She expressed this desire to Harpal Singh and asked him to get the teeth for her. The darbar tried to convince his queen that it was an unreasonable demand and it was not worth entering into conflict with the Badshah for a trivial thing like bangles. But the queen did not relent and finally he had to give in to her obstinacy.

At that time there was a practice amongst royalty of gathering daan (grains). While doing this the men of Darbar removed the teeth of the elephant. When Mohammad Begda came to know of this he was furious and decided to attack Harpal Singh's kingdom.

(Due to this incident concerning the elephant's teeth the towns at that time came to be known as Daatveri and Dantipur. In course of time these names turned into Dantivada.)

It is said that at this time, Harpal Singh bowed at the feet of Vijaysar Mata and said,"Mother there is going to be a war on your land. I have to fight against a big Badshah. Without your help victory is not possible. You will have to protect all of us." At this time, the temple bell rang automatically and this convinced him that Mataji would protect them.

Next morning the war began. To everyone's surprise, four ladies came disguised as men and within a short time, they alone defeated the army of the Badshah.

The four were really Vijaysar Mata, Varai Mata, Sejol Mata and Ismani Mata. The Badshah who was watching the battle in hiding was convinced that there was something unusual happening. The Matas who were disguised as men had nose rings, and this convinced him that some goddesses were fighting the battle. That night he saw Vijaysar Mata in a dream and following her advice, he sent a message asking for a peaceful settlement the next day.

Full of awe at the strength of the divine Goddess, he bowed down to her and told Harpal Singh,"You are the ruler of these 42 villages. I will not come in your way."

Thus, it is said that Vijaysar Mata protected the village and because of this feeling, the faith of all the devotees increased tremendously. Today there is a kindled Akhand Diya in the temple of the Mata.

DEESA REGIMENT TEMPLE, DEESA

The city of Deesa was the property of the Nawabs of Palanpur. In the year 1814, Nawab Firoze Khan gave Deesa to the British on a lease of a hundred years. The British then established a military regiment in Deesa and from that time the place came to be recognised as Deesa camp/cantonment.

Around 1816, the soldiers of the regiment who were living at Deesa, established four temples where they could worship. The temple where the attendants and the troops of horses lived was called the Rasaleshwar Mahadev. The temple where the small division of the regiment of the army lived was called the Regiment Mahadev. The temple at the place where the cannons were kept was called the Topkhana Mahadev. The temple at the place where the regiment of the army lived was called the Paltan Mandir.

The Paltan Mandir is an extraordinarily magnificent specimen. It is also known as the Paltan Rajmandir or the Lakshminarayan Mandir. The appearance and shape of this temple is unbelievable and it attracts followers and tourists for its extraordinary art. It is regarded as a specimen of exclusive architecture.

The beautiful expression on the face of the Idol of Bhagwan Lakshminarayan is so attractive and divine that it instantly captivates the devotees. Beside this idol is a very beautiful Image of Lord Hanuman. On the other side is a small but very beautiful temple of Lord Shiva. The main attraction of this temple is the Panchmukhi Shivling. The main significance here is to offer billipatra to the Shivling. Devotees come here in large numbers during the auspicious month of Shravan.

Another important aspect of this temple is that Krishnajayanti and Ramnavmi are celebrated here with great pomp and splendour. On Gujarati New Year a very elaborate Annakut (offerings of various kinds of prasad and almost 56 varieties of dishes) is made. On Bhadarvi, Ekam Hom and Havan (sacrificial fire) are performed.

In the courtyard of the Lakshminarayan temple, an arrangement has been made for feeding birds.

DHARNIDHAR MANDIR, DHEEMA

The temple of Dheema Dharnidhar, in the Dheema village of Vaav Taluka, is a place of pilgrimage for millions of people. It is 90 kms from the town of Palanpur and has acquired its name from an idol named Dheeman.

Within Dheema lies the majestic temple of Bhagwan Dheema Dharnidhar which is very famous because of its miraculous idol of Dharnidhar Bhagwan. It was originally found in the Aravalli mountains of Rajasthan. It is widely believed that a kanbi from the Ked community dreamt about the idol, and took the villagers to the place. The villagers informed the priests and the idol was installed on the throne amidst great celebration.

There are a number of religious stories associated with this temple. It is believed that the King of Jetpur had a temple constructed for this idol and tried to move the idol there. A loyal devotee, Gadhadharji, refused and as a result was imprisoned. God appeared to the king in a dream and ordered the king not to harass the devotee. Following this, Gadadharji was allowed to return safely to his village with the idol.


Another story that is commonly associated with this temple is that of Queen Rangabai, wife of the Ranaji of Vaav. When her character was questioned, the Queen used the temple to prove her innocence. After six days of prayers, the idol in the temple shook and it is said that streams of water were seen flowing from both the idol's and the Queen's toes. Following this, the Ranaji apologized to the Queen.

It is also believed that on his way to Dwarka after killing Kansa, Shri Krishna came to Dheema. On reaching the village, he expressed his desire that Nand, who was accompanying him, stay here for a while. Thus, this place was honoured by the presence of Bhagwan Srikrishna.

It is said that when Allauddin Khalji came to Gujarat, he once visited this village. Driven by religious fanaticism, he tried to destroy this idol. At that time, a strange thing happened. Honey bees started flying in huge numbers all around the idol, protecting it from destruction. Due to this, Allauddin was unsuccessful.

Every year on the days of Dhuleti, Kartaki Poonam and Nirjala Ekadashi, a fair is held here and people bathe at the Madela lake and worship the idol.

SHRI PARSHWANATH DERASAR, DUVA

The Duva Jain temple in the district of Tharad, 50 kms from Deesa. It is one of the older places of worship for Jains. This temple has a 2300-year old idol of Padmaprabhu Swami.

It is said that Surpal Shravak, born in 800 BC to Bhattimata in the village of Duva, acquired sainthood by taking Diksha at the tender age of seven. Amazingly, he acquired Acharyapad when he was just eleven years old. Due to his religious achievements, the highly prosperous city of Duva also became a center of great religious activities, even receiving the status of a Dharmabhumi.

The old Jinalay is situated very near the new Jinalay. From this old Jinalay, there is a tunnel about 50 kms in length leading to Ramsan, and from there to Bhildiyaji. In those days idols were placed in the tunnels for prayers and worship. This was particularly important to protect these precious idols from the attacks of other tribes.

In 2059 VS, a new Jain temple was constructed. In this Jinalay (Jain temple), a 2300 year old, majestic idol of Shri Amijhara Parshwanath Bhagwan has been placed. On the left of this idol is another idol -- that of Shri Sankheshwar Parshwanath Bhagwan and on the right is the idol of Kalikund Parshwanath Bhagwan.

GANGESHWAR MAHADEV - HATHIDARA

The Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple is situated at Hathidara, a village 22 km from Palanpur. The temple stands in scenic surroundings alongside a check dam with the river flowing nearby.

It is believed that an ashram of Rishi Chyavan, a contemporary of Lord Shri Ram, existed near the temple. A number of sages lived at this ashram, which extended right up to Hathidara. While the Pandavas were in exile in the forest, they built a Shiva temple, which was later renovated and restored by the Parmar kings of Abu.

Since this area of the forest was regularly frequented by elephants it was named Hathidara. Every year a large fair is held at the Temple on the last Monday of Shravan which is attended by large numbers. The temple has facilities for stay and food.

VISHVESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR, IQBALGADH

Three kms from Iqbalgadh village on the Palanpur-Abu road is the Vishveshwar Mahadev Temple.

This temple is said to have been established centuries ago, when there was a thick forest, and several wild animals circled the area. The river Banas also flowed here.

When this place was dug up, a Shivling was found, which had the shadow of a snake above it. A grand idol of Ambaji Mata and an idol of Lord Ganpatiji were also found.

There is a legend behind this centuries-old Visheshwar Mahadev temple. The grand, majestic city of Chandravati Nagri stood between Amirgadh and Aburoad. Chandravati was ruled by kings of the Parmar clan. Many artistic Jain and Hindu temples were found there. It was believed that in this and its neighboring cities 999 Jhalar (beans) kept ringing throughout the day. One of them was the Jhalar of Visheshwar Mahadev Mandir.

The temple is small, but the Shivling that originated from the ground with a sarpchaya is considered to be most auspicious and miraculous.

GURUNO BHANKHRO, JALOTRA

18 kms down the road from Palanpur to Ambaji, there is a small village called Jalotra. Near this village is a very auspicious place known as Guruno Bhankhro. As it is situated in the midst of the Aravalli mountain range, one has to make one's way through raw rough roads and ditches and climb difficult rocks to reach it. Many devotees, however, make their way through the arduous journey to reach this auspicious place.

An image of Guru Dhudhlinath has been installed in this holy place. It weighs 640 kilograms. It is believed that this idol of Guruji reached the Guru's Gufa (cave) situated at Guruno Bhakhro in seven hours. According to legend, Guru Dhudhlinath had successfully performed this task by taking the form of Guru Motiram. People also believe that ages ago Guru Dhudhlinath had stayed on this Bhakhra, done deep penance and acquired miraculous powers.

The villagers from villages surrounding this Bhakhra often come to pay homage to this Guru. They also take an oath before him for fulfillment of their wishes. There is a practice of doing "Guru's Lot" on the birth of first son.

KEDARNATH MAHADEV MANDIR, JASORE

A major attraction for environmentalists and nature-lovers, Jasore has been declared a Bear Sanctuary. The ancient temple of Kedarnath Mahadev is situated in this area, which falls within the Aravalli mountain range. It is 35 km from Palanpur and 8 km from Iqbalgadh Highway Road.
The Jasore peak stands at a height of 1067 metres. It is the highest peak in Gujarat after Girnar. It is also known as Saatpado. The temple, situated at 1500 feet is said to belong to the period of the Mahabharata. According to a report by Dr. B.M.Vishwanath, this temple is five to seven thousand years old.

This beautiful natural site is developing into a popular tourist spot.


On the border of Amirgadh, lie the ruins of the ancient and one time flourishing city of Chandravati. A Chhatri of two famous lovers, Sadevant-Savaligana can be found at a nearby village Sarotra, where there is also a famous Jain temple known as 'Bavan Dhaja'.

There is a 'Muniji ni kutir' and Shiv Temple at 2000 feet on Jasore. There is a temple of Vishweshwar Mahadev on the banks of the Banas river near Balundra, on the way to Jasore. A fair is held at this site every year at the occasion of Shivratri.

SIDDHAMBIKA MATA MANDIR, JUNA DEESA

This temple is in the Juna Deesa. It is 33 kms from Palanpur and 6 kms from Deesa.

The inspiring statue of Siddhambika was installed sometime between the years 1500-1600. People believe that if one prays here with a pure heart and mind, all one's wishes will be fulfilled.

According to legend, Brahmaji wanted to build a beautiful city and he asked Vishvakarma to execute it and fulfill his desire. Vishvakarma selected a scenic spot, constructed the town there, and called it Darshanpur (which is today called Juna Deesa). He then erected the temple and installed the statue of Siddhambika Mata. Next to this temple is a temple of Siddeshwar Mahadev.

On special days like Janmashtami, Mahasud Aatham, and Chaitra Sud Punam, grand processions are taken out from here which are attended by a large number of people.

This tourist site has a good Dharamshala and Bhojanshala.

SAMOR MATA MANDIR, KAKAR

The Samor Mata Mandir is 5 kms from Vada, which is on the Radhanppur-Palanpur highway.

Approximately 2000 years ago, what we today call the Kakar village was a huge city and a prime trade center. At that time it was a Yatradham of a Devi, Navdurga. There was a large stone well here with steps leading down to the water.

Kakar was then ruled by the Hindu king Mansingh. Religion had a deep impact on the villagers who had installed a golden image of their Kuldevi for worship in every home.

In 1553 VS, Mohammad Ghazni attacked India. Hindu temples were being getting destroyed, and idols and images of Hindu gods and goddesses were being ruined. The villagers of Kakar saw this as a threat to their religion and were very worried about the safety of the images of their Kuldevi installed in their homes.

Raja Mansingh, an ardent Hindu and a clever king, called all the leaders from the villagers and instructed them to immerse all their idols in the ancient large stone well, so that they do not get damaged or fall into the hands of people of different religions.

Sometime after this incident, when the threat of foreign invasion diminished, the villagers relaxed to a great extent and wanted to bring back their Kuldevi images. But the water levels in the well had risen greatly and it proved difficult to remove the immersed idols from the well. Raja Mansingh again came to their rescue. He instructed the villagers to pray to the old Devi whose temple lay next to the well, as well as to their Kuldevi. They had to then take Mangal Feras around the well, and according to their individual customs, they had to untie their Kanakn Doras and offer Naivedh. Since everybody's images of the kuldevi were immersed, they were all also told to offer a coconut in the well. The villagers were convinced by the king's suggestions and implemented them. The kuldevi images were retrieved. On seeing this, Raja Mansingh named this devi 'Samuh Mata', which became Samor Mata in time. The devotees of this Mata have great faith in her. If somebody is sick in the family or they have any problems, the devotees take an oath before their Devi. If their wishes are fulfilled and their problems are solved, they come here for the Darshan of the Mata and offer Naivedh.

RAM MANDIR, KATAV

The Katav village of Vaav taluka has the privilege of being the seat of the unique Ram temple, which imparts peace and tranquility to its devotees. The name of Ram is ingrained on every part of the temple. It can be seen on the steps leading to the temple, the roof, the walls etc.

The devotees who come here are very religious. One can see everyone sitting and writing the name of Lord Ram. In this temple Rammantra is also installed in place of the idol of Lord Ram.

Pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Meerabai, Bhakt Narsaiya and many other Ram devotees, adorn the walls of this temple. In the Gokh outside the temple, there are beautiful idols of Ram Bhakt Hanumanji on one side and Tulsidas, the writer of the great epic, Ramayana on the other side. Devotees believe that doing the parikrama (going around the circumference) of this temple is as good as doing the parikrama of the entire universe.

Opposite this temple is another Ram Temple where idols of Ram and Sita have been installed.

Thus, this pious land of Katav has the honour of being the seat of three Ram temples.

ASHTABHUJA AMBAJI MANDIR, KHUNIA

10 kms from Amirgadh is a small temple of Ambaji Mata. There is a beautiful statue of Ma Ashtabhuja Ambaji in this temple.

In ancient times, idols of Lord Shiva and Amba Mata were found in the thick jungle in this area. The devotees considered these statues to be miraculous and thus this area came to be known as Mai Nagar. This area being aboriginal, this temple is mainly visited by tribals.

This temple was built with the assistance of Palanpur Nawab in Khunia, 38 km from Palanpur and 3 km from the highway amidst the mountains. This temple is related to the history of ancient Chandravati.

On the days of Chaitri and Aso Navratri, Ma Amba is worshiped here with traditional Garba. In Khunia, near the Ambaji Mata Mandir there is a beautiful temple of Lord Shiva. Near this is an auspicious peepal tree where there is another grand idol of Hanumanji. Opposite to this is the idol of Kalbhairav. Thus, devotees visit several idols at the same time in this area.

A large fair is held on Chaitri Punam in the temple of Ambaji Mata in Khunia. Devotees and tribals come here in large numbers to enjoy the Bhatigad Sanskriti in colorful clothes.

KOTESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR, AMBAJI

The auspicious Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is situated 5 kms beyond the famous temple of Ambaji, 64 kms from Palanpur.

The Aravalli Mountains, the origin of the River Saraswati, and this temple combine to create an aura of holiness and beauty. Situated 64 kms from Palanpur, the Koteshwar Mahadev temple is about 600 years old. The Bhargava Rishi's Ashram and Valmiki Gufa (cave) lend it a historical feel. There is one kund (pond with steps leading to the water) wherein the River Saraswati flows from a Gaumukh (mouth of a cow carved in stone). Pilgrims take a ceremonial bath here.

Nana Fadanvis Maharaja had stayed in hiding here after the fall of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi during the mutiny of 1857.

This temple was restored a few years ago. There is a Vishnu temple nearby where idols of Sapatamatrukas and Vishnu are preserved.

This Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is an ideal place for devotees to spend time at length due to its peace and serenity.

Nearby is another temple named 'Valmikashram'.

DERASAR, KUMBHARIA

Situated 1 km from Ambaji, this temple is a superb example of artistic carving and sculptures which are even comparable with the Dilwara temples at Mt. Abu. This temple was built by Vimalshah, who was the Dandnayak of Chandravati before Bhimdeva. It is also known as Arasan Kumbhariaji.

Kumbharia town was established by Kumbhasana of Chittod, and is named after him. It is believed that during the reign of Bhimdev Solanki, the Dandnayak Jain Vanik of Chandravati, Vimal Shah, had thought of building the Kumbharia Jain Derasars to commemorate his victories.

There are five ancient Jain temples in this pilgrim center. Even older than the Dilwara Temple, these derasars have the idols of Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan, Shri Neminath Bhagwan, Shri Shantinath Bhagwan, Shri Sambhavnath Bhagwan and Shri Mahavir Swami Bhagwan.

There are a total of 94 pillars in the Derasar, out of which 22 have exquisite and intricate carvings, and beautiful idols of Gods, Goddesses and Vidhyadharis installed in them. There are Jharokhas (artistic balconies) in the 'rangmandap'. The artistically carved and highly beautiful terraces and beautiful 'torans' give a clear idea of the grandness of this temple.

SHITALAMATA MANDIR, KUMPAT

The Shitalamata temple at Kumpat, in the Deesa district, is considered to be the biggest Shitla Mata temple in the Banaskantha District. The Ahir Bharwads initially inhabited Kumpat village, but over time people from other communities also settled there.

Kumpat is famous because of the Shitla Mata Temple. The idol in the temple is considered to be miraculous -- many devotees claim to have experienced miracles in their lives.

The temple is more than three hundred years old. It is believed that the new idol was installed around 25 years ago.

A fair is organized in Kumpat twice a year -- once on Fagan Vad Satam and once on Shravan Vad Satam. Thousands of people attend the fair organized on Shitla Satam Day as the devotees have immense faith in Shitla Mata. Annually about 2000 Man (40 seers) of salt is offered to the Devi as oath (Manta).

Traditionally, Garba is played during Navratri. People from the nearby villages also participate in the Garba with great enthusiasm.

SHRI MANIBHADRAVEER DERASAR, MAGARWADA

Magarwada, in the Vadgam taluka at a distance of 18 kms from Palanpur owes its importance to being one of the three centres of Manibhadraveer. The other two are Ujjain and Aklod.

Manibhadraveer, as the legend goes, was born in his previous birth in Ujjain as Manekshaw. He was a staunch Jain Shravak whose Guru was Maharaj Hemvimal Suriji. During his chaturmas in Agra, Manekshaw was deeply influenced by his Guru's discourses on the sacredness and importance of Shatrunjay. Due to this, he decided to undertake the arduous penance of going on foot to Shatrunjay to do the Navanuni Yatra and end it with a 2-day fast under the Ryan tree.

With his Guru's blessings, he set off on the auspicious day of Kartiki Poonam. When he was close to present day Magarwada, a gang of dacoits attacked and killed him, severing his head, arms and lower body. Manekshaw, who was totally absorbed in his Navkar mantra jaap and the sacredness of Shatrunjay, was reborn as Indra of Manibhadraveerdev.

Meanwhile, his Guru's disciples were facing many difficulties because of the Bhairvos. According to the Dev vaani, his Guru came to Magarwada, and sat down in Dhyan to overcome these difficulties. That is when Manibhadraveer decided to help his Guru to overcome the obstacles caused by the Bhairvos. He subdued them. His Guru honoured him by installing a 'pind' of his legs in Magarwada on Maha Sud Pancham day and constructed the temple there.

Today, people flock to Magarwada in large numbers to pray to Manibhadraveer to solve their problems and help them overcome their obstacles.

Traditionally, all Palanpuri Deravasi Kotharis need to go to Magarwada before their wedding, to pay their respects to the Adishtai Dev - Shri Manibhadraveer. This 'mahet' ritual is strictly adhered to by most families even today.

RAMDEV PEER, MAJADAR

Majadar is a village in the Vadgam taluka of Banaskantha. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the King of Ranuja (in Rajasthan), Raja Ajmalji had no children. He and his Queen Minaldevi were very depressed and worried about this. One day, while praying to God they pleaded with him to bless them with a child. It is believed that they then heard a divine utterance which said that they would be blessed with a child who would be an incarnation of God himself. Nine months after this divine utterance, Queen Minaldevi gave birth to Ramdev Peer.

As a child, Ramdev started growing and it is believed that people started noticing divine traits in him. He was extremely benevolent. He would always be ready to help others, irrespective of their caste and status. The villagers apparently even began experiencing strange miracles through his benevolent deeds. For example, it is said that on one instance, a merchant was traveling on a ship. Some thieves looted him and killed him. Ramdevji came to the rescue of the merchant's wife, miraculously restored the life of the merchant, ensured that the thieves caught a grave disease, and that the merchant got back his goods. Many such instances were apparently noted because of which people began addressing Ramdevji as Ramdev Peer and recognised him as an incarnation of God.

After leading a glorious life, full of divine deeds of benevolence, Ramdevji decided to give up his mortal body. In the year 1515 VS, on the day of Ajwali Beej of the Badharva month, the Patotsav began in the Darbargadh. After seven days of celebration, on the auspicious day of Bhadarva Sud Naum, in the presence of thousands of people who had gathered from far and wide, and also in the presence of family members who had all gathered to witness the divine, auspicious and miraculous occasion, Ramdevji took Samadhi, left this mortal world and attained enlightenment. Along with him his ardent devotee Dalibai also took Samadhi. In the Majadar village there are temples of both these great men.

SHIV MANDIR, MOKESHWAR

Mokeshwar is situated in Vadgam taluka, on the banks of River Saraswati. It is 45 kms from Palanpur.

There is a temple of Mokeshwar Mahadev there, which is visited by a large number of people to make offerings to their forefathers for the peace of the departed souls. There is also an ancient cave known as Pandava Gupha (cave) here.

It is said that after losing all their belongings and property in a game of 'shatranj', the Pandavas had to go to the jungle for twelve years, after which they had to spend one year in total disguise.

In the thirteenth year, the Pandavas, after traveling through dense jungles and across high mountains, reached a place in the Banaskantha district. Looking at the soothing riverbank surrounded by mountains and the enchanting sunset, a tired Yudhishthira told Bhima that he thought the place was suitable. All the four brothers agreed because the place was suitable to live in considering various aspects.

As Yudhishthira did not eat anything in the morning without praying to Lord Shiva, Bhima set out to search for a Shiva temple. After searching for a long time, he did not find one, and was worried that his brother would have to remain hungry due to his oath. He then thought about Lord Shri Krishna and started digging the mountain. He dug a big hollow, installed a Shivling in it, brought his brother to the spot and made him pray in front of the Shivling. Yudhishthira was very pleased to see a beautiful Shivling at such a magnificent place. The Pandavas spent a long period of their Agyatwas (disguised stay) at this place.

During this period Trikalgyani (omniscient) Lord Shri Krishna, using his super powers, discovered the whereabouts of the Pandavas and came to meet them. In the auspicious presence of Lord Shri Krishna, the Pandavas performed the Shradh of their father and his soul was liberated. This is why the place is also known as Mukteshwar.

Hundreds of pilgrims visit this Mandir during the period of Shradh.

NADESHWARI MATA MANDIR, NADABET

The Nadeshwari Mata Temple is situated in Nadabet. Nadabet is a military post situated 20 km from Suigam, near the Pakistan border.

According to folklore, the King of Junagadh Navdhan had stayed here with his huge army while on his way to rescue his sister Jashal from the clutches of the ruler of Sindh. At that time, a Charan girl had provided food to the army and had guided them to ensure a safe passage through the desert. This Charan girl is worshipped as Nadeshwari Mata. In the past the Chauhans ruled over Nadabet and before independence it used to be prosperous.

It is said that during times of drought, when people migrated towards Sindh, they first offered prayers here.





There is a gaushala near the temple. To the west of the temple is a BSF camp and to the North is a Hanuman temple.

Every year on Chaitra Sud Navam, thousands of pilgrims visit the temple and attend the annual fair. The soldiers at the BSF post near Nadabet take part in the worship too.

GANGESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR, PAANSWAL

The temple of Gangeshwar Mahadev is three kms away from the village of Pantahvada in the Banaskantha district. It is believed to have been built by Mata Kunti, mother of the Pandavas.

The temple has its roots in the events that occurred during the rule of King Shantanu. He had married Goddess Ganga and had a son called Devavrata, who was also called Gangadev after his mother.

After Ganga left him for failing to keep his promise of not questioning her for any of her deeds, King Shantanu was lonely and grieving. One day after Devavrata had been chosen as the heir, Shantanu was smitten by Matsyagandha (Satyavati), the beautiful daughter of a fisherman, and proposed marriage to her. Her father agreed on condition that it would be her son who would be crowned king after Shantanu and not Devavrata. Devavrata agreed to the condition and vowed never to marry so that he would have no heir to fight for the throne. To honour his sacrifice, ever since he made his vow, he was known as Bhishma.

Years later, Chitravirya, Shantanu's son doubted Bhishma's integrity and suspected his relationship with his mother. When his doubts were clarified he repented and as a penance he hid in a peepal tree, applied cow dung from a triangular farm nearby on it and asked a shepherd to burn him alive. After that, he was freed from the sin that he had committed.

The Rabari clan (shepherds) settled at that place which was called Pipavati (today it is called Paanswal). It is believed that Mata Kunti built this temple here as a tribute to her ancestors.

It is also believed that a stream from the River Ganga passed from here.

In the Gokh near the temple, idols of Gangeshwar, Dattatray, Kuber Bhadari, Budhdheshwar Mahadev, Lakshmi Narayan, Annapurna Devi and Rama Peers have been installed.

A fair is held here every year on the day of Kartaki Chaudas.

MULESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR, PADAN

The Muleshwar Mahadev temple is located in Padan village of Vaav taluka of Banaskantha district.

In the period between 942 AD and 997 AD, King Mulraj Solanki had become very powerful. On hearing that Ra Lakha was another powerful force in the nearby area of Kachch, he decided to wage war against him.

Mulraj sent his army six times and fought seven wars but was unsuccessful in his attempts to defeat Ra Lakha. On seeing his pain and confusion, a Rishi muni told him that he needed to worship an idol that had never been worshipped before if he wanted to win. On hearing this, the King announced a prize for anybody who could find one such idol for him.

Everybody set out in search. Around this time, in Padan village, a Brahmin who saw a cow drop her own milk on a particular spot was convinced that an idol of Mahadev was present there. As soon as King Mulraj was informed, digging started at that spot. Seven years later, a shivling was found.

King Mulraj invited Brahmins and rishis from all over the area, and worshipped the shivling in front of everybody. Following this, sweets were distributed across the area.

Mulraj once again waged war and this time, he defeated Ra Lakha. He was greatly pleased and built a temple for the idol at the place where he had found it. This temple became famous as Muleshwar Mahdev. Another temple was built at the place where the cow had dropped its milk and this was called the Dudheswar Mahadev.

JAIN TIRTH, RAMSAN

Ramsan is a small village in Deesa district. The ancient name of this village was Ramsainyapur. Around 2200 years back, the Jain King Samprati Maharaj consecrated the statue of Sri Adeshwar and other Jain idols in a magnificent Jain temple.

In the year 1084 VS, under the auspicious guidance of Jain Acharya Sri Sarvadevsuriji, King Raghusen got this ancient temple renovated and got all the idols formally installed.

This town was demolished during the reign of the Muslim Badshahs. At that time in order to save the majestic idols of this temple, it is said that Rajput Kshemsingh sacrificed his life. The statue of this Kshemsingh still stands in the the temple. Soon after, this town was destroyed.

In the year 1988 VS, the Sri Sangh of this place renovated the remains of the original Jain derasar and got all the idols re-installed. Out of these statues, the 2200-year-old idols of Shri Adinath Bhagwan and Ambika Mataji are in the lower area of the Jinalay (Jain temple). The mighty Shikharbandh Jinalay above this was constructed in the year 1999. At that time the majestic statue of Adinath Bhagwan was brought from the basement and installed as Mulnayak Bhagwan. The Tirth also houses the idol of Shri Manibhadra Veer. The practice of offering sukhdi to the deity is prevalent here. A havan is also performed on Aso Sud Pacham.

A very significant fact about this village is that out of respect to this auspicious Jain Temple, the non-Jain villagers do not light the sacred fire on Holi.

SHRI PARSHWANATH DERASAR, RUNI

This pilgrimage centre of the Jains is situated at Kakrej in the Bansakantha district.

There is an idol of Prabhu Parshwanath installed in the derasar, which idol originally belonged to a Muslim gentleman. An ardent devotee, Meghasha was instructed by a Yaksh in his dream to buy this idol (Pratima) from the Muslim gentleman. Following these instructions, Meghasha acquired the idol. While returning to his hometown Nagarparkar from Patan, he stopped for a night on the banks of the river Banas. He installed this idol at the river bank and performed 'pooja' as a daily ritual.

It is said that the villagers residing on the river bank saw a miraculous sight. There were foot prints at the place where the Pratima had been temporarily installed. With great faith and devotion the villagers made a small temple on the river bank in Anandpur village, and installed those foot prints in that temple.

From that day on the villagers started worshipping those footprints in the temple. Many years later, in V.S. 1997, on the day of Shravan Vad Chauth, the whole village was inundated with heavy rain and the small temple and footprints were washed away. The villagers were very upset, but when they saw lighted diyas floating in the water they forgot their distress. Awestruck by the miracle they had witnessed, they prayed fervently to Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan to reinstall his footprints in the village. Soon after, Laherchand Seth living in Bhadrevadi village got a dream, in which the Adishtayak Dev of Parshwanath Bhagwan gave him instructions regarding the location of the footprints lying in the water. Following the instructions, the footprints were located and a small temporary temple was built to house them.

All the Jain sanghs from the neighbouring villages wanted to have the footprints installed in their village. To solve the problem, chits were drawn and the decision was made to install them in Runi.

From that day on, the villagers of Runi prospered and peace and happiness prevailed in the village. Credit for this was attributed to Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan.

It is believed that Amijharna (tears of love) are often seen falling from the eyes of Parshwanath Bhagwan and Padmavati Mata.

SHITALAMATA MANDIR, RUPAL

In the Rupal village of the Vadgam taluka, a large fair is organized on the auspicious occasion of Sitada Satam. This fair is attended by about 25,000 devotees. The main attraction for most devotees is a visit to the 800-year old temple of Shitalamata. People have immense faith in this temple and it's devi.

Shitalamata is the 'Lokmata' of the Hindus, yet people of other Religions also believe in her. They take vows in her name and do not fail to pay homage to her when their problems are solved. (Besides Gujarat, West Bengal is another place where Shitalamata is worshipped by people on a large scale.)


Shitalamata is also largely worshipped by women because it is believed that she blesses them to remain Akhand Saubhagyawati (i.e. she protects her husband's life). The meaning of Shitala is 'the devi who gives coolness'. That is why Neem leaves are used in various forms for people who are suffering from Shitala (a type of boils). This is because it is believed that when one suffers from these boils, the devi has come out in the open. Neem leaves are spread on the bed of the patient to provide a cooling effect.

Besides the temple of Shitalamata there are two smaller temples of Hanumanji.

AMBAJI MANDIR, SANADAR

At a distance of 2.5 kms from Deodar stands the Ambaji temple of Sanadar, which is growing day by day in fame and stature.

Approximately a thousand years ago, a small temple of Ambaji was installed by a young unmarried girl (kumarika) of the Brahmabhatt Samaj. From that time onwards, this temple was recognized as the Nana Ambaji temple.

Today, an aarti of one hundred and eight diyas is performed regularly. Also, a trishul of 56 kgs, made of Panchdhatu, has been installed close by so that the followers can view it while visiting the temple. The temple and the surroundings have also been further beautified by a garden and a carved wooden gate.

On the other side of the temple, there is a well-organized cowshed which keeps not just cows, but also other animals. There is also a birdhouse near the cowshed. The animals and birds are also given medical treatment when required.

GOG MAHARAJ MANDIR, SEMBHAR

The snake has always been worshipped as a Hindu deity. In Sembhar village of Vadgam, 45 kms from Palanpur, there is a temple of a snake (called Gog Maharaj), which is about 2000 years old.

A long time ago, on the basis of a miraculous Rajasthani folk-tale, a temple was constructed near a stream.

As legend goes, a Patel traveling in a bullock cart found a snake idol flowing down the River Saraswati. He had a vision and was asked to consecrate the idol at the place where he found it. Devotees came from far and wide for darshan of the snake deity. There was also a small Dharmashala (caravanserai) set up. But it was difficult for devotees to visit the temple during the monsoon, and gradually the number of visitors started declining. In the course of time, the temple lost its glory.

In these circumstances, for the benefit of the devotees, a new temple was constructed on a spot a little above the stream. Devotees again started coming in large numbers and regularly offered coconuts to the deity. Many devotees got together to upgrade and beautify the temple - the people from Chansol village in Mehsana district even formed a trust and collected a sizable amount of funds towards this noble cause. In a short span of time, a majestic new temple was constructed beside the old Gog Maharaj temple, and today, it is widely recognized as an extraordinary specimen of art and architecture. One is awestruck by the new temple, as the pillars, the dome and all other parts of the temple have figures of the Snake God set artistically in layers. There are lakhs of stone carvings of the god. One has to see the temple to experience the impact of its beauty.

The huge number of coconuts tied to a tree near the temple bear proof to the popularity of this temple and the faith of its devotees. Many take vows before the Snake God and have claimed to have witnessed miracles.

On the occasion of Pancham, hundreds of pilgrims come to this temple.

KAPILESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR, VEED

The famous Kapileshwar Mahadev lies 6 kms from Vaav, at a place called Veed. Every Monday, large numbers of devotees flock to this temple.

It is believed 5000 years ago, during the period of the Mahabharata, the great scholar Kapil Muni constructed this temple. It is said that after performing a taap in this area, Kapilmuni considered this to be a perfect place for a taap, and so he set up a temple of Lord Shiva (Mahadev) here.

On seeing the importance of this temple, the Pandavas, who were traveling in the jungle decided to rest here. Yudhishthir had a habit of never eating before he had prayed to Lord Shiva. As this place facilitated this habit of his, the Pandavas stayed here for a long time.
