Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust Launches ‘Mission Million Books’ with Alibaba Group

The Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, in association with Alibaba Group, has initiated Mission Million Books, which seeks to donate 1 million books to 10,000 schools in India by 2021. So far the campaign has reached out to 3,500 schools and colleges, donating 3.5 lakh books by the end of 2017.

At the first exhibition of this project which was held in Mumbai, close to 1.05 lakh books and 25,000 note books were distributed free of cost to 535 schools and colleges in Maharashtra. The second exhibition of this project was organised at Baramati, Pune where over 50,000 books were donated to 1,000 schools and colleges in the region. At the third exhibition organised at Satara, 50,000 books were donated to over 500 schools and colleges.

In April 2018 another book exhibition has been planned in Nav Samaj Mandal School at Vile Parle to donate 1.25 lac educational books to schools and colleges of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Further, the project will seek to expand to more rural regions in Maharashtra and other states in India.

Led by Ratna Nidhi, the mission aims to cultivate reading habits among children by providing access to quality and informative reading material to educational institutions in India.

Explaining the background of the initiative, the Trust says that illiteracy continues to plague a large section of the people in India, and while, in recent times, many children have shown the urge to learn, they are mostly unable to afford academic books due to high prices. Often, libraries in educational institutions lack quality educational and informative books.

This project is part of a process of changing the reading habits of India’s children. It could be a milestone in empowering our educational institutions with world class educational material.
