Annika Mehta, a six-year old first grade student at Manhattan's Chelsea Prep has made her off-Broadway debut with the highly acclaimed show 'The Jungle'. The play has received good reviews with the NY Times describing it as a "vigorously engrossing production".
Young Annika is the daughter of Tarana and Ashish Mukesh Mehta and the grand-daughter of Geeta and Mukesh Shantilal Mehta and Kaushika and Late Sunil Rasiklal Mehta.
In The Jungle, Annika plays the role of Amal, a little girl representing refugee children everywhere. The British play has been written by two men who spent time in a refugee camp, and its cast includes former Calais “Jungle” refugees. The show moved to the NY stage in Dumbo in Brooklyn at St Ann's Warehouse, after a successful run at London's West End.
For over two years, Annika has been learning Bharatnatyam in New York and was selected for the role of Amal after she took part in an audition through the dance academy. She and another girl were selected for the role and they alternate performances.
