Noted ornithologist Dr Salim Ali’s classic book on ‘Indian Birds’ is now available in Gujarati thanks to veteran environmentalist Dr Ashok Kothari, who worked on the translation. Published by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), the book was launched at functions held in Mumbai on October 1 and in Amdavad on October 5.
The book is a culmination of efforts put in by Dr Kothari, over the last 25 years. An avid tree and bird lover, he has also thrice been the Hon Secretary of BNHS. “I have worked on the translation at different points of time, but had to often put it aside due to other commitments. It was only completed recently, but has already received a very good response,” he said.
The 441-page book contains descriptions, as well as the Gujarati, English and Hindi names of 538 birds found in the Indian subcontinent along with beautiful coloured visuals. The colour plates are by late Karl D’Silva, India’s famous bird artist.
Dr Kothari said that within a short time the book has become popular among the young bird lovers and is proving to be a useful guide for many in Palanpur, Deesa and other parts of Gujarat. He adds that it is informative and visually appealing and “would make a nice Diwali gift”.
He informs that the book is priced at Rs 500, but is available for a short period of time at Rs 400 only at Bombay Natural History Society, Hornbill House, Fort, Mumbai-400001. (Contact Divyesh Parikh, Deputy Director, BNHS on 022-22025481/82).
