Organisations and Individuals from Community Step Forward to Help Needy During Lockdown

 RNCT Food distribution

A number of individuals and organisations from the community have come forward to organise distribution of food and rations to the underprivileged and other needy sections of society during the ongoing lockdown in the country.

 

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, Mumbai

Ratna Nidhi is responding to the COVID-19 crisis by providing Daily over 6,250 hot nutritious khichdi meals to the daily wage workers in Mumbai city.  These are the groups who are worst affected by the pandemic. 
 

Since the launch of the project on 29th March till 15th April 2020, Ratna Nidhi has served over 95,000 meals to the target group in Mumbai. 


Meals are distributed in Borivali, Malad, Kurla, Byculla, Dharavi, Parel, Mazgaon, Matunga, Bandra, Mankhurd, Andheri, Vile Parle, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Dhobi Talalo, Colaba & Fountain & daily wage earners near BKC through Bharat Diamond Bourse


Ratna Nidhi identified beneficiary groups and secured permission from the Government and the Mumbai Police for this initiative including for movement of 40 staff and volunteers who are currently assisting in the distribution. 


The organisation has partnered with DP’s restaurant who have provided their kitchen premise for this initiative at Matunga, Dadar, Chembur and Ghatkopar. Ratna Nidhi is providing all the food grains and cooking & packing material for the project and ensuring delivery. The meals are cooked at DP’s kitchen, packed in hygienic containers and transported to the identified beneficiary groups using hired tempos & cars who are given a route map for delivery which begins at 10 am in the morning and ends at 6 pm in the evening. 


Ratna Nidhi has an extensive network within the communities in Mumbai owing to its work in the past which has been useful in executing this project.


Ratna Nidhi will continue to provide meals to the target beneficiaries till end of June 2020, and as per needs at that time may extend the program to continue providing for the daily wage workers.

  SBPJA Relief Work

Shree Banaskantha Palanpur Jain Association, Chennai


The SBPJA has initiated and sponsored the preparation and distribution of cooked food packets to migrant labourers, elderly and other needy persons in three locations: 400 packets near Ambattur, 500 near Redhills and 100 near Pattalam. A total of a thousand such packets were distributed per day during the initial days.


SBPJA is also continuing with food and grains distribution. It is also collecting donations for PM CARES fund separately.

PSK-PDP Food distribution

Palanpur Samaj Kendra Charitable Trust and PDP Club in Mumbai


The Priyadarshini Park (PDP) Club with the help of Palanpur Samaj Kendra Charitable Trust distributed 100 food (grain) packets of (5 kg. atta, 5 kg. rice, 1 kg. daal & 1/2 kg. sugar) from Shanti building at Kemps Corner to needy persons in the locality.


The two organisations also distributed food to 1000 needy persons in Dadar with the help of Vardhman Sthanakwasi Jain Sangh & Navneet Health Centre. 


A group of over 35 volunteers, mostly from the community, are working on this project.


Special efforts are also being made to reach out to others who need help, including those from middle classes, who usually hesitate to ask.


Shefali Shah (Psychological Counsellor & Sp Educator) and Head of Dept at Dr.Harshida Pandit Counselling & Remedial Centre also offered counselling advice to those in need.

Dimexon Group in Coimbatore


The company, run by the family of late Kirtilal Mehta, has been preparing 900 freshly cooked food packets on a daily basis, sufficient for both meals, at the industrial kitchen of its manufacturing facility in Coimbatore. The idea is to ensure that at least 30,000 people are provided with 12,000 kilos of daily freshly-cooked food during the ongoing lockdown. The project has been undertaken with the support of the Department of Health, Revenue and the District Collector.
 

Additionally, Dimexon’s in-house engineers are helping to design and manufacture low-cost and effective medical ventilators as well as other support devices which will then be distributed for usage to local hospitals and/or health institutions.

Kothari family distributes food in D Ward, Mumbai

Prasham Kothari, son of Tejal and Amish Sharad Kothari, along with his mother reached out to 500 slum families in D Ward providing essential food grains and other rations. Many family members and friends supported this initiative.
 

The family was guided by Jyotsnaben Mehta and Mangal Prabhatji Lodha to ensure safety precautions during the distribution.
