Dr Kumud Mehta Featured in Special Publication on Top Pediatricians in India

 Dr Kumud Pravin Mehta

Dr Kumud Pravin Mehta has been featured in a recent coffee-table publication on India’s Top Pediatricians published by Medgate Today, a leading Asian healthcare magazine headquartered in India. It contains profiles of leading pediatricians from across the country, and focuses on their achievements, what inspired them and what is their vision for the future.
 

Widely recognised as the pioneer of Pediatric Nephrology in India, Dr Kumudben has been the recipient of multiple awards, recognitions and orations during her illustrious career spanning many decades.


After completing her MBBS from G.S. Medical College KEM Hospital in 1960 and MD (Pediatrics) from Mumbai University, Dr Mehta was associated with KEM Hospital and the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Parel, Mumbai.

She has been a recognised as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and Fellow of Indian Society of Nephrology.
 

Dr Kumudben is quoted as saying that she was inspired to enter medicine following the example of three family members, two uncles and her elder brother, who were doctors. Subsequently, she was also inspired by Mother Teresa and her late husband Dr Pravin Mehta, as well as by Dr S.M. Marchant, Head of Pediatrics at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, who helped her set up the first Pedi-Nephrology Department in western India.

Among the many recognitions and awards she received were the Asian Pediatrics Nephrology Association award for pioneering the specialisation in India; orations ranging from BL Khullar Oration of Indian Society of Nephrology in 1992 to Prof B.S. Chaubey Oration 2019 of the Nephrology Association, Nagpur to Lifetime Achievement Awards from Indian Society of Nephrology, Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology, Asian Pediatric Nephrology Association and others. 

Dr Mehta, who has also published many books and articles, has been running the Mother and Child Hospital at Gamdevi for nearly four decades and is presently also associated with Peadiatric Nephrology at Jaslok Hospital. She set up the Kidney Foundation for Children (KFC) in 2014, which is led by a young team under her guidance.
