Dr Kumud P Mehta received the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award instituted this year by the The Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ISPN) at a virtual event held during its two day CME (continuing medical education) held on December 12 and 13.
 

The award has been conferred to recognize the work of senior pediatric nephrologists who have made sustained and impactful contributions to the field of pediatric nephrology within and outside India, the ISPN said.

Dr Mehta was unanimously chosen by the executive committee and senior advisory council of the society, the organisation said. Its office bearers further added, “On behalf of ISPN and the entire pediatric nephrology community of our country, I want to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to you for your distinguished service in the field of pediatric nephrology and your enormous contributions to cause of children with kidney diseases in India.”
 

A citation handed to Dr Mehta along with the award noted "her outstanding contributions to improving the lives of children with renal diseases and making a difference to the specialty by going the extra mile".

Dr Mehta is currently a senior consultant Pediatric Nephrologist at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai and visiting consultant at Nanavati Hospital and Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children.

She was a pioneer in the field in India and created the first division for paediatric nephrology in western India at Wadia Hospital in 1976. She had a distinguished career and has mentored a number of students who went on to become distinguished clinicians themselves.
 

Dr Mehta also set up the Kumud Pravin Mehta Charitable Trust in 1990 that assists children from needy families who need treatment for nephrological as well as other illnesses too.
 

Recently, she was featured in a publication profiling India’s Top Pediatricians.
