PSK to Open Activity Centre for Senior Citizens at 'Shanti'

The Palanpur Samaj Kendra (PSK) has decided to open an 'Activity Centre for Senior Citizens' which will operate from the Shanti building premises at Kemp's Corner, Mumbai. The aim is to develop it as a community initiative that will provide ‘super-senior’ citizens an opportunity to interact as a group, while also pursuing some creative activity.

PSK has appealed to those who would like to join to register their interest before September 13, 2021.

Kaushik M. Mehta, one of those closely involved in developing this project, explains that coming together for shared activity can energise the seniors in the community. “Many enjoy good health. If given an opportunity to do things they really enjoy, they will maintain a positive approach to life which can otherwise be lost so easily.”

Members can visit the centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week from 3-5 pm where different types of activity will be conducted.

Among the list of activities being considered are sports / games (chess, carrom and other board games); arts & craft activity; music, religious and others.

Special sessions are also planned for training in the use of computers and smart phones. While some of these will be for those who are 75 and above, other sessions will also be conducted for the 60-75 age-group who know the basics, but want to improve their skills and abilities to explore the electronic world.

In addition, from time to time, the centre plans to organise half / full day trips to places of interest such as museums, art galleries, flower & plant shows, derasars, temples and much more.

“Mumbai offers so many opportunities for such activity – from the Museum, cultural events at places like NCPA, the flower shows at Dadar, or even visits to the National Park. But, there is little time to explore and enjoy these during the working years,” explains Kaushikbhai. “Such visits may help our seniors develop new interests, or revive one of their old passions, too.”
