Russell A. Mehta, India Managing Director of Rosy Blue has recently been appointed as a member of the Board of Governors of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), a leading name in the field of gemmology research, testing and education. The appointment of Mehta to this prestigious post was announced at the Board meeting on November 15, 2022.
The GIA said that Mehta, with 38 years of experience in the diamond industry, helped to transform Rosy Blue from a family diamond business to a company now represented in more than 14 countries.
Mehta is one of the two new appointees along with Lake Dai, a technology expert and adjunct professor of applied artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University. He follows in the footsteps of his uncle Dilip Mehta who served as a Governor in the late ‘90s.
The GIA Board of Governors provides strategic direction to the Institute and acts as a steward of the public interest. The 16 Governors include gem and jewellery industry leaders, distinguished academics in relevant scientific fields and experts in technology, business, finance, consumer brands, retail and risk management. He follows in the footsteps of his uncle Dilip Mehta who served as a Governor in the late ‘90s.
Board chair Lisa Locklear said, ““Lake and Russell bring a wealth of expertise and experience that will complement and diversify the Board’s strengths.”
On his appointment, Russell Mehta said, “I am grateful to both the GIA and Rosy Blue for giving me the opportunity to take on this new role. I am who I am because of all my colleagues at Rosy Blue, the whole team, and this brilliant industry, who have played a significant role in shaping me to be found worthy of the GIA’s Board. Thank you!”
In his illustrious career, Russell Mehta has held a number of other prestigious positions on industry bodies and non-profits. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the World Diamond Council (WDC) from 2020-22, the Vice-Chairman of The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council from 2015-17, as well as a member of its apex Committee for a number of years.
