Late Shri U N Mehta
The Mehta family at the Centenary function
The family of Late Uttambhai Nathalal Mehta (1924-1998), founder of the Torrent Group, has pledged to donate Rs 5,000 crore over the next five years to the UNM Foundation, to honour his legacy. The announcement was made by his sons Sudhir and Samir Mehta at a special function at Ahmedabad on March 30 held to mark his birth centenary year.
The brothers now lead the diversified business group established originally as a pharma company by their father in 1959. This contribution will be over and above the statutory CSR contributions of Torrent group companies, they said.
The UNM Foundation, which was set up by the UN Mehta himself, “will channelise these funds towards vital sectors such as healthcare, education, environmental conservation, and the promotion of arts and culture… and aim to create a ripple effect of transformation and progress”, according to reports.
The highlight of the centenary celebrations was the screening of The Prescription, a documentary film on the life of U N Mehta. According to a post by the Foundation on Linked In, the documentary, by acclaimed director Pan Nalin, chronicles the life journey of Uttambhai Mehta, “which was marked with multiple personal challenges, severe financial crisis, business failures and serious health complications”.
