Saisha Mehta Publishes ‘Threads of Tradition’, a Book on ‘The Essence of Palanpur’

Saisha K Mehta recently published ‘Threads of Tradition’, a book that captures ‘The Essence of Palanpur’. In the brief span of 40+ pages, the book takes one through the unique history, culture, traditions and strong bonds of the Palanpuri community. But more than being just a descriptive narrative, the book also tells the special story of how Saisha discovered the significance of belonging to the Palanpuri community and calling the city in Gujarat her home.

Saisha is the daughter of Poorna and Kashish Kumar Mehta, and granddaughter of Nita and Kumar R. Mehta.

In her introductory note to the book, Saisha, who is currently a student of the Cathedral and John Connon School, writes that the book is her “way of sharing the special culture of Palanpur, the place I proudly call home”.

She passionately explains, “As a little girl, I did not fully understand the significance of the stories about our roots, traditions, and the strength of the Palanpuri spirit that (my grandmother) was sharing… but as I grew older, things began to change... I started participating in community events… saw first-hand how tightly knit and supportive the Palanpuri community is… (and) I wanted to capture what makes our community so special.”

‘Threads of Tradition’ is divided into 16 compact chapters, each with appropriate photos to accompany the text. Every chapter covers a particular theme, including the Origin and Historical Formation of Palanpur, various Rituals and special Cultural facets of traditional community life, the Diamond Business and the Community, the Impact of Urbanization, Community today, etc.

Saisha acknowledges the help and guidance from senior community members, Shantibhai Mangalji Mehta, Dr Vikrambhai Mehta, Sanyuktaben Pravinbhai Mehta, Ranjanben Kanubhai Jhaveri, with special mention of her grandmother Nitaben K Mehta, who “for as long as I can remember… would tell stories about our roots, our traditions… (She) has always been an inspiration to me”.
