'Knight of the Blind Award' conferred on Surekhaben Rajnibhai Mehta

The Award Winners

Smt. Surekhaben Rajnibhai Mehta received the 'Knight of the Blind Award' at a special function organised by the Lions Club of Central Madras on June 1, 2012, which is observed as 'Hellen Keller Remembrance Day'. Dignitaries at the function included Dr. S S Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai and Mr. Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner to South India.

Surekhaben was honoured for the services she has rendered for over three decades as a committed volunteer at Sankara Nethralaya, a premier eye care institution in Chennai, During this time she has assisted thousands of visually impaired patients.

The award was conferred on her alongside other awardees including well known Ophthalmologists and Institutions such as:

  •     Dr. Mehul Shah & Dr. Shreya Mehul Shah, Drashti Netralaya, Dahod, Gujarat.
  •     Dr. Swapnali Sambhapandit, Guwahati Lions Eye Hospital, Guwahati, Assam.
  •     Drashti Netralaya and Dahod Tribal  Community Welfare  Eye care Centre, Dahod, Gujarat.
  •     The New Indian Express, Chennai
